Stainless steel

Table of contents

Contrary to popular belief, stainless steel is not a single element; rather, it is an iron alloy that contains at least 10.5% chromium. The secret to its “rust-proof” nature lies in this amount of chromium. Chromium reacts with oxygen in the air to form a very thin, invisible, “self-healing” layer of chromium oxide on the metal surface, which prevents moisture and corrosion from penetrating the inner layers.

Key Ingredients

In addition to iron and chromium, other elements are added to this composition to improve specific properties:

  • Nickel: To increase ductility and heat resistance.

  • Molybdenum: For resistance to chemical corrosion (such as salt water).

  • Carbon: For increased hardness and strength.

Classification of stainless steel types

Depending on the crystal structure and composition, this metal is divided into the following main groups:

Family Characteristics Common Uses
Austenitic (300 Series) Non-magnetic, high ductility Kitchenware, medical equipment, plumbing Industrial
Ferrite (400 series) Magnetic, more affordable Auto parts, cheap home appliances
Martensitic Very high hardness, sharpenable Knife blades, turning tools
Duplex Combination of austenite and ferritic, extremely strong Oil and gas industries, offshore structures

Why is stainless steel popular?

  1. Corrosion resistance: Its biggest advantage is its durability in humid and acidic environments.

  2. High hygiene: Its smooth, non-porous surface does not allow bacteria to grow and is easy to clean.

  3. Beautiful appearance: Its silvery shine conveys a sense of modernity and cleanliness.

  4. Recyclability: Stainless steel is 100% recyclable and is considered one of the most environmentally friendly metals.

Challenges and Care

Despite its name, stainless steel is not completely “stainless.” Prolonged exposure to chlorine (such as in swimming pool water) or excessive salt can damage its protective layer. To maintain its shine, it’s best to use mild detergents and avoid scrubbing with a rough wire dish, which can cause deep scratches.
